Botox in the orbicularis oris muscle is an aesthetic treatment applied to the muscle surrounding the mouth to relax excessive contractions. This helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the lips, commonly known as “barcode lines” or perioral wrinkles.

What Is It For?

Botox in this area is used to:

Reduce fine lines that appear around the lips due to aging or smoking habits.

Relax the orbicularis oris muscle to prevent excessive lip puckering, softening vertical lines.

Improve the appearance and projection of the upper lip without the need for dermal fillers.

In some cases, Botox can also be used for a “lip flip,” which slightly rolls the upper lip outward, giving a fuller appearance without adding volume.

Effects

The main effects of Botox in the orbicularis oris area include:

  • Smoothing of wrinkles around the mouth, creating a younger, smoother appearance.
  • Improvement in the symmetry and projection of the upper lip, offering a more defined and relaxed look.
  • Aesthetic enhancement without causing an artificial or overly plumped appearance.

Duration

The effects of Botox in this area typically last between 3 and 4 months. Over time, muscle activity gradually returns, so periodic treatments are recommended to maintain results.

Post-Treatment Care

  • Avoid touching or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours.
  • Avoid excessive lip movements (such as smoking or drinking through a straw) during the first few hours after treatment.
  • Refrain from intense physical exercise and exposure to extreme heat during the first 24–48 hours.
